How did it "mess them up" and what dilution ratio did you use? Are they stained? Pitted?

Chances are they were non-clear coated polished aluminum. I doubt the damage is anything that can't be fixed with some good metal polish and a Powerball. If you can post up some pictures, that would help.

Hi George,

You must use caution on unclear coated polished wheels. If you want to use Brown Royal on these types of wheels. You must dilute it 8-10 times with water or hazing and streaking will occur. I have an 86 Corvette with factory polished aluminum wheels. Took me 6 hours to remove the worn clear coat, wet sand and polish them to a like chrome look. I do not use Brown Royal to clean them. I can use Cherry Bomb cleaner or I use Deep Purple Wash & wax soap with a sponge or wash mitt. Deep Purple works awesome on uncoated polished wheels.Shines them up real nice. Even if the environment is starting to oxidize them. My Corvette is a showcar. I do not let the wheels get very dirty. Uncoated polished aluminum wheels have a ph problem. Raw aluminum does not like an acid cleaner (low ph) or Brown Royal and alkaline degreasers that are a high ph. I can make a wheel cleaner neutral ph 7. But it wont clean very well. The highest you can go before hazing occurs is about a 9-9.5 ph. I may create a wheel cleaner that is strictly for polished aluminum wheels but it wont clean as well as Brown Royal.

Most car manufactures produce polished aluminum wheels with a clear coat over them. The clear coat protects the wheel from environmental oxidation, road contaminates and harsh cleaners. A wash & wax ,car wash soap or Brown Royal diluted 1:8-10 is the way to go for polished aluminum wheels. The best way to repair the wheel is to use a metal polish to remove the hazing and streaks. We have an excellent metal polish made by Malco products. Its easy to use and very effective. I can send you some to fix the wheels. Sorry you had a problem. Take care.

If they're just hazed/streaked than it should be an easy fix with that metal polish. Even done by hand it should work fine, but if you have a Powerball or Dremel tool with a buffing wheel the job will go much quicker.
